Employment Customisation Workforce Australia Trial Update

#employment customisation Apr 16, 2025

The trial of our Employment Customisation course with Workforce Australia is now complete—and I want to share what came next.

We heard from people across the sector—Workforce Australia advisors, DES providers, and NDIS employment support practitioners. Their feedback was honest, thoughtful, and incredibly valuable. We also looked at how people were engaging with the course through the Kajabi platform—and what we saw lined up with the feedback: it needed to be more targeted.

Originally, I tried to create one course that worked for both employment providers and employers. But it became clear that trying to cover both in one space was watering it down for everyone.

So I made the decision to split it.

This course is now fully focused on employment providers—giving them the tools, strategies, and support they need to do this work well. I’ll be creating a separate course for employers, designed specifically to help them understand and embrace customised employment within their businesses.

I believe this version is stronger, clearer, and more practical than ever—and I genuinely believe it has the power to change lives, one person at a time.

This course brings together everything I’ve learned over the past 30 years: working across multiple employment providers, running my own recruitment business, working in global organisations, and more recently, supporting people through Workforce Australia, and the NDIS.

It’s a wide range of experience, but the same thing has shown up again and again:

People join this work because they care.

They want to help. But the system doesn’t always make that easy. Staff are trained in compliance and systems—but not always in how to have meaningful, person-centred conversations that lead to lasting employment outcomes. That’s the gap I set out to fill.

And I know how hard this work can be.

A few years ago, I took on a role as a manager at a Job Active site in Mandurah. The branch was managing a caseload of nearly 2,000 people, and the systems in place didn’t make much sense. The staff were doing their best under a lot of pressure, but the focus was mostly on ticking boxes and meeting compliance—not on real, person-centred outcomes. Many of the clients had disengaged. They’d been through the system for years and had stopped expecting anything to change.

It was tough. Personally and professionally. I started feeling the impact—physically and mentally. It was one of the more challenging periods in my career, but also a turning point.

Because I couldn’t just accept that this is how it works.

So I started building something. First, a training program for staff. Then something practical for clients. Eventually, I developed a 10-module “Job Club” PowerPoint course. And thanks to an incredible CEO and HR team, I had the support to put it into action.

At the time, I didn’t even know it had a name—but it did:

Employment Customisation.

That’s how this all began.

Since then, I’ve gone on to deliver employability skills training to young people aged 16–24, and more recently, provide employment support to NDIS participants. Along the way, I’ve kept building on the course—adapting, refining, and strengthening it with everything I’ve learned.

Because when someone is truly supported into meaningful work, it changes more than just their job. It changes their confidence. Their sense of purpose. Their future.

That’s why I created this course.

Not to add more pressure to the people doing this work—but to support them. To give them tools that work in the real world. To remind them why they started. And to help make the job more rewarding, more human, and more hopeful.

I believe in a better system.

One that lifts people up instead of leaving them behind. One that’s about progress—not just compliance. Centrelink was never meant to be a way of life. It was meant to be a safety net when people fall—not something that keeps them stuck.

We can do better. One person at a time.

Because everyone deserves someone who believes in them.

Let’s be that person!
